Glossary

  • Primary Care Provider/Physician: A term generally used by medical insurance providers for a physician who provides a first contact for patients-the health care expert whom a person would go to first for medical concerns and regular checkups. Primary care providers are generally family practice doctors, general internists, pediatricians, or sometimes obstetrics/gynecologists. They may refer patients to more specialized health care providers.
  • Behavioral health: Often used as another term for mental health. The ICARE Partnership defines behavioral health as the domain of health care encompassing prevention, management and treatment of mental and emotional illness, developmental disabilities and substance abuse.
  • Telemedicine: Using telephone, internet, videoconferencing systems or other communication technology to transfer medical information. In some cases, telemedicine is being used for distance care-to diagnose, treat and prevent disease and injuries-or to conduct research and evaluation.
  • Telepsychiatry: The practice of using telemedicine for psychiatry services. Videoconferencing is a growing way for patients and psychiatrists to interact through telepsychiatry.
