More Children Connected with Family

To determine if the Family Finding model can achieve permanent placement and improved outcomes for foster-care children in North Carolina, The Duke Endowment is providing more than $3 million to support a four-year program implementation and evaluation in nine counties.

Impact

Because Family Finding began in North Carolina in early 2009, it is too early to determine its effectiveness.

However, Family Finding does have some significant, non-scientific results from its work in California.

  • Santa Clara County secured connections for 24 of 27 youth in 2003 and 85 of 91 in 2004.
  • Alameda County created lasting connections with family members for nearly 72 youth in 2005.
  • Sacramento County secured potential lifelong connections for 30 of 45 youth in 2006.
  • In 2007, Los Angeles County decreased the number of children in foster care by 3,000 using the Family Finding model.
