The downturn has impacted our ability to fund new grants. Existing funding commitments will be honored; however, until economic conditions become more favorable, consideration will be given to programs that focus on church based child care, affordable housing, food and hunger, and leadership development. Applicants are required to follow numerous steps before submitting an application or breaking ground. STEP 1. Review the Readiness Checklist. STEP 1. Review the Readiness Checklist.The checklist ensures that you are meeting requirements for the United Methodist Church, The Duke Endowment and the State of North Carolina. STEP 2. Complete and return the Preliminary Planning Guide (formerly called Study Guide).Before submitting a formal application, a Local Church Study Committee must determine the validity of current programs through effective evaluation and planning. The Committee should involve itself in research, study, discussion, and serious consideration of the total program going on in the church at the present time and look ahead to the future. The Preliminary Planning Guide will be a helpful tool as the Committee conducts their evaluation. After completing the Guide, save a copy for your records and send a copy to the Endowment. STEP 3. Agree to comply with the Terms of Agreement.After reviewing the Terms of Agreement, sign and return the form to The Duke Endowment. STEP 4. Schedule a site visit.Once the Preliminary Planning Guide and Terms of Agreement are received by the Endowment, we will call you to arrange a site visit (may take up to 4 weeks). STEP 5. Submit preliminary schematic drawings.If The Duke Endowment approves the schematic drawings and elevations, you will receive a letter of notification. STEP 6. Receive a letter from the Endowment approving eligibility to begin construction.The Endowment will send you a letter approving your plans and notifying you that you may begin construction. STEP 7. Inform the Endowment of construction contract.When you have signed a construction contract or have begun construction, alert The Duke Endowment by phone, email, mail or fax. Depending on the contractor, this step may take several months.
