Since 1924, The Duke Endowment has been committed to supporting small and rural hospitals, helping to make quality medical care accessible to residents in these communities.

Fortifying Foundations of Care

To support the quality of health care in rural communities, The Duke Endowment seeks to strengthen hospitals in North Carolina and South Carolina.

Challenge

Small and Rural Hospitals Face Financial Challenges

Small and rural hospitals play a critical role in making health care accessible for rural residents. In communities that are isolated geographically, a single hospital often provides crucial care for residents of all ages. Small and rural hospitals, however, face increasing financial challenges: competing for medical and health care professionals, maintaining financial sustainability, improving quality of care, and investing in state-of-the-art technologies and facilities. These challenges impact the quality of service in rural communities and jeopardize the sustainability of hospitals — ultimately placing the well-being of patients at risk.

Response

Investing in Rural Hospitals

To help small and rural hospitals operate more efficiently and serve patients better, The Duke Endowment has supported investment in new technologies and equipment; education and training opportunities for medical and health care providers working in rural hospitals; development of programs that promote health and well-being, increase access to care and improve quality of care; and construction and renovation of medical care facilities serving rural communities.
