• Davidson College. The liberal arts college in Davidson, N.C., announced in the spring of 2007 that it would eliminate loans from its financial aid packages. Its website includes information about The Davidson Trust.
• Duke University. In Durham, N.C., this university was created in 1924 by James B. Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The website describes the elite A.B. Duke Scholarship and other merit scholarships.
• Furman University. In Greenville, S.C., Furman launched a major scholarship program in 2008. The website gives more details about the Townes Scholarship.
• Johnson C. Smith University. This historic university in Charlotte, N.C., provides financial aid to 85 percent of its student body. The website offers information about alternative loans and other packages.
