The Duke Endowment Announces Staff Promotion and New Hires

The Duke Endowment is pleased to announce a key staff promotion and three new hires.

Tania Mapes has been promoted to Director of Human Resources. Carrie Underwood and Quintin Van Dyk have been hired as Program Analysts in the Endowment’s Rural Church and Health Care program areas, respectively. Elijah Small was hired as an IT Support Specialist.

Since joining the Endowment in 2013, Mapes has provided leadership in human resources, including staff recruitment and onboarding, compensation and benefits, performance management, professional development, workforce planning and employee engagement. She served as Human Resources Manager until her promotion to Director of Human Resources at the beginning of March.

In her new role, Mapes provides strategic oversight of the Endowment’s human resources function.

Tania’s promotion reflects both her outstanding contributions and the critical role human resources plays in supporting our mission and our people,” said Endowment President Rhett N. Mabry.

Mapes succeeds Susan McConnell, who retired from the Endowment after 19 years of service. Dean Burgos, who joined the Endowment in August 2025, serves as the Endowment’s HR Manager.

Underwood joined the Endowment in late 2025 as a Program Analyst in the Rural Church program area, bringing experience in research, evaluation and education policy. Her work supports efforts to strengthen rural churches and the communities they serve across North Carolina.

Quintin Van Dyk joined the Endowment in late 2025 as a Program Analyst on the Health Care team, where he supports health care initiatives through research, analysis and program implementation focused on improving outcomes for individuals and families.

Elijah Small joined the IT department in January as its new Support Specialist. In that role, he will provide technical support, troubleshoot systems and networks, and manage device access and security to ensure reliable IT operations.
