A "WARM" Response
The Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry, or WARM, began in 1996 when local United Methodist Church leaders organized disaster relief crews to repair damage caused by back-to-back hurricanes. Since then, WARM has worked to rebuild homes and restore hope for low-income neighbors in coastal North Carolina.

Even as a little girl, Shawnee Garrick knew that diabetes had a grip on her family. Her grandmother died because of health complications from the disease; so did her grandfather. Her parents were diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a year apart.

Weaving a Safety Net of Hope
On a warm day in late winter, a dozen teens take turns behind a wheelbarrow, filling it with rich compost and pushing it across a bumpy field. They are laughing and sweating, and before the afternoon sun slips away, they have six community garden beds ready for spring planting.
