“At the end of the day, there’s only one of you, and you got to get that person to the highest point you can,” says Mondale Patterson, a 17-year-old who has been involved with Partners in Ministry in Laurinburg, N.C., since the third grade.
The organization is dedicated to unlocking the potential of youth and children, providing housing and urgent home repairs and serving as a “one stop shop” for neighbors in need across Richmond, Scotland, and Robeson counties. These counties have some of the highest unemployment and poverty rates in North Carolina.
Although Partners in Ministry is a faith-based organization, don’t look for all of this activity to happen just in church on Sunday, says founder Dr. Melba McCallum. “We’re bringing the church outside of the walls of that church and into the community,” she explains.
