Thomas Lane, a James B. Duke Scholar, shares how the scholarship created space for real intellectual freedom, allowing him to follow his interests, gain international experience, and build a path toward clinical research and medical school.
When he created The Duke Endowment in 1924, James B. Duke included support for higher education as one of his top philanthropic priorities. The Endowment continues that legacy of support through endowed scholarships at its four beneficiary schools. Those scholarships include the James B. Duke Scholars program at Davidson College, Furman University and Johnson C. Smith University and the Angier B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke scholarships at Duke University. In this video series, recipients explain what receiving the scholarships have meant for them.
